How the dipstick is inserted will affect how it is aligned with the oil sump tube. 

Note the picture below shows the dipstick over the top of the oil sump tube.

Note the picture below shows the dipstick underneath the oil sump tube.

Note that whether the dipstick goes above or below the oil sump tube
will show a much different oil level reading on the dipstick.
